Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) leads the DRYFLOR network, and hosts the project website and database. RBGE has a 40 year history of working in seasonally dry ecosystems in the Neotropics, and has contributed considerably to their scientific understanding and conservation. Originally, this work focused on tropical savannas, but recently more attention has been given to dry forest. Toby Pennington has worked on tropical dry forests since 1998. The main focus of his research has been understanding the floristic composition and historical biogeography of dry forests, which has involved extensive fieldwork in Latin America. This field experience has reinforced his awareness of the terrible plight of dry forest, and the poorly known nature of the flora of many areas. A strong motivation to improve the floristic knowledge of these forests and to contribute to their conservation led Toby to propose this network.
